Description

This course is designed to educate participants about the basics of financial social work and its implications for LGBTQIA+, including Two-Spirit, communities. Through this training, participants will be exposed to basic financial social work concepts, such as budgeting, spending, borrowing, and economic policy and how these topics uniquely impact LGBTQIA+ individuals, families, and communities.   

 

Maryland:   This workshop meets the requirement for Anti-Oppressive Social Work Practice for the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners' COMAR 10.42.06.03.A.(1)(d) with a focus on cultural humility and social justice.    

District of Columbia:  

  • This workshop meets the continuing education requirement for DC Public Health Priorities in the following topic: 10. Implicit bias, cultural competence and Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) in health and health care.  

  • Alternatively, this workshop also meets the LGBTQ+ requirement.   

  • You cannot use this workshop to satisfy both requirements.

Jack Mirabella (they/them) is an attorney and macro social worker who works in federal health policy. Their expertise lies in financial social work, economic justice, and 2SLGBTQIA+ community-building, advocacy, and education. They have been teaching financial social work at the University of Maryland School of Social Work since 2016 and also co-facilitate relationship and financial education workshops for LGBTQIA+ couples through the TOGETHER Program at University of Maryland, College Park. They are deeply committed to educating with an intersectional, equity-focused lens.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Upon the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define financial social work and examine the ethical implications of engaging in financial social work with LGBTQIA+ communities.   

  • Interrogate and address personal biases and barriers to understanding when working with LGBTQIA+ individuals, families, and communities. 

  • Develop basic-to-intermediate understanding of the unique economic needs and barriers for LGBTQIA+ communities.   

  • Apply knowledge of micro, mezzo, and macro social work considerations to address systematic barriers to financial capability for LGBTQIA+ communities.

Category I Maryland BSWE Requirement

The Office of Continuing Professional Education at the University Of Maryland School Of Social Work is authorized by the Board of Social Work Examiners in Maryland to sponsor social work continuing education programs. This workshop qualifies for 3 Category I Continuing Education Units for anti-oppressive social work practices. The Office of Continuing Professional Education is also authorized by the Maryland Board of Psychologists and the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors to sponsor Category A continuing professional education.

Late Fee: On September 13, 2024, a non-refundable late fee of $20 is added to the base price. Late fees cannot be refunded or applied to account credit.
