Description

This training will use a clinical lens of cultural humility and an inclusive therapeutic approach. In this professionally curated session, we'll explore the intricate dynamics of personal and professional influences on therapeutic rapport, helping you connect authentically with clients from diverse backgrounds.   

This training will provide practical strategies for recognizing and addressing microaggressions in play therapy, fostering an environment of safety and respect. Participants will learn techniques that empower clients and strengthen therapeutic bonds with clients and their families. Participants will be able to enhance their play therapy practice and promote social justice within their therapeutic relationships.  

 

**This workshop meets the requirement for Anti-Oppressive Social Work Practice for Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners COMAR 10.42.06.03.A.(1)(d) with a focus on cultural humility.

Next Place Therapy Services


Sabra Starnes is an independent clinical social worker licensed in Maryland, DC, Virginia, and Ohio. She is also a registered play therapist supervisor and clinical supervisor. She is a national speaker, author, trainer, and digital creator.   

Sabra is known for her work in creating and delivering training consultations on adoption-related issues using both a professional and personal perspective as a transitional adoptee and adoptive mother. Sabra has a personal and professional view around the adoption area and amplifies the adoptee's voice.  

Sabra owns Next Place Therapy Services, a group practice in Largo, MD, that serves clients ages 3 to 18 and their families using play therapy and expressive therapies. She also owns Next Place Lounge, which offers hybrid training to mental health clinicians nationally and internationally. She has created and delivered her training on adoption play therapy and sand tray. Along with offering therapy to practice, she provides clinical and play therapy supervision to mental health therapists.  Sabra ensures that training, supervision, and consultation support therapists to develop cultural humility, understand intersectionality, and work with all clients.

6:30 PM - 7:15 PM: Learning Objective 1: 

  • Objective: Identify the influence of our personal and professional values, beliefs, and life experiences on establishing a safe and collaborative therapeutic rapport with clients. 

    • Explore how personal and professional values impact therapeutic rapport. 

    • Discuss the role of beliefs and life experiences in client relationships. 

    • Engage in a discussion on creating a safe and collaborative therapeutic environment.

7:30 PM - 8:15 PM: Learning Objective 2: 

  • Objective: Analyze the implications of current and historical racial injustices on clients' physical and emotional reactions during sessions. 

    • Examine the impact of current and historical racial injustices on clients. 

    • Discuss how racial injustices may manifest in clients' physical and emotional reactions. 

    • Explore strategies to address these implications in therapy. 

8:15 PM - 8:30 PM: Large Group Activity: 

  • Objective: Apply Knowledge to Case Scenarios 

    • Divide participants into small groups. 

    • Provide case scenarios and ask each group to analyze the influence of values, beliefs, life experiences, and racial injustices on therapeutic rapport and client reactions. 

    • Reconvene to discuss their findings. 

8:30 PM - 9:00 PM: Learning Objective 3: 

  • Objective: List techniques and activities in play therapy that foster empowerment, support, and constructive therapeutic bonds with both clients and their families. 

    • Identify techniques and activities in play therapy that promote empowerment. 

    • Explore methods to provide support to clients and their families. 

    • Discuss strategies for building constructive therapeutic bonds.

The Office of Continuing Professional Education at the University Of Maryland School Of Social Work is authorized by the Board of Social Work Examiners in Maryland to sponsor social work continuing education programs.
