What is your conflict style? Kenneth Thomas and Ralph Kilmann developed a conflict mode instrument and defined five conflict styles. This session will provide an overview of the conflict styles and a deeper understanding of the connection between relationships and outcomes in achieving desired results. Participants will explore their own reaction to real-life situations and examine the role of context and identity in addressing conflict. This session will focus on professional interactions, although participants often find application to their personal interactions as well.

This training includes access to the TKI Conflict Style Assessment that is included in the registration.

Toby Treem Guerin, JD, Clinical Instructor and Associate Director of the Center for Dispute Resolution at the University of Maryland Carey School of Law (C-DRUM). Professor Guerin teaches the Mediation Clinic where she provides instruction on the theory and practice of alternative dispute resolution (ADR). Professor Guerin advances ADR throughout the law school serving as supervisor of ADR externships and advisor to the ADR Team. 

As associate director of C-DRUM, Professor Guerin oversees program development, training, and mediation services. She has trained hundreds of individuals on topics related to mediation, negotiation, communication, and restorative practices. Professor Guerin regularly serves in the role of a neutral providing mediation, coaching, restorative circles, and facilitation for courts, state and federal agencies, prisons, and the community.  

Professor Guerin served as the primary author on a comprehensive report on court-affiliated ADR programs in Maryland and was involved in the state-wide development of the mediator quality assurance initiative. She is chairperson of the Maryland State Bar Association’s ADR Section and is active with the American Bar Association’s Section on Dispute Resolution. 

Ms. Guerin is the 2020 recipient of the Robert M. Bell Award for Outstanding Achievement in ADR in Maryland, bestowed by the Maryland State Bar Association. She is active nationally with the American Bar Association Section of Dispute Resolution and the American Association of Law Schools Clinical Section ADR Committee. Ms. Guerin graduated with honors from Maryland Carey Law and is a member of the Maryland Bar. She holds a B.S. in mathematics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
