Description

Our kids are in trouble. We are seeing a dizzying increase in the presence of adolescents suffering from mental health disorders. Too often, adolescents are turning to substances to manage untreated mental health disorders and the stressors of growing up. Social Workers need to be prepared for the adolescent presenting with co-occurring disorders. This workshop will equip you with some basic knowledge to assess, diagnose and engage adolescents presenting with a substance use disorder. We will discuss SUD specific assessment questions that provide the answers needed for diagnosis. Evidenced based treatment approaches that assist in the engagement of adolescents will be presented.  The DSM V diagnostic criteria for SUD will be reviewed and discussed with the adolescent in mind. Substance use treatment referral will be presented, taking into consideration the ASAM criteria levels of care.
