Nearly 1 in 10 Washington DC residents identify as LGBTQ, a figure nearly twice as high as any state in the union. Of the LGBTQ population in DC, 43% identify as a person of color. This seminar will explore the unique demographics of DC’s LGBTQ communities of color, the colonial legacy of gender and how it impacts Black and indigenous residents. Participants will also explore the barriers to seeking and receiving services, and best practices for bridging gaps in access to care. Join social worker Randall Leonard, LCSW-C (they/them/theirs) to explore client-centered techniques to reach, connect, and serve this large and diverse group of clients in a variety of health care.

Maryland-native Randall Leonard (they/them/theirs) is a proud nonbinary licensed clinical social worker specializing in the care of LGBTQIA individuals. They currently hold healing space focused on the liberation of Black and Queer people through encouraging authenticity, reconnecting to history and lineage, and empowering shared lived experiences. They also facilitate a weekly group for trans and gender-diverse people of color to process intersectionality topics between race, culture, and gender.
Randall holds a Master of Social Work from the University of Maryland School of Social Work with a concentration in clinical behavioral health. As a strong advocate for transgender and gender non-conforming individuals, their recent achievements include testifying for the “X” gender marker on Maryland driver’s licenses passed and enacted in 2019, and being featured as part of Sephora’s 2019 “Belong to Something Beautiful” gender-diversity campaign.

The Office of Continuing Professional Education is also authorized by the Maryland Board of Psychologists and the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors to sponsor Category A continuing professional education.

Course completion requirements: To earn CE credit, social workers must log in at the scheduled time, attend the entire course, and complete the online course evaluation located in your account. After the online course evaluation is completed, you are then able to download your certificate. Partial Credit will not be given for participants who arrive late or leave early.
Unversity of Maryland School of Social Work, Office of Continuing Professional Education, provider #1611, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. UMSSW Office of CPE maintains responsibility for this course. ACE provider approval period: 02/11/2021 to 02/11/2024.
