This content includes an overview of psychedelic effects investigated by a variety of scientific methods (pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacogenomics, neuroscience) for several types of psychedelics (e.g., psilocybin, ayahuasca, MDMA, ketamine). The current state of research findings with Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies (PAT) using Ketamine, MDMA and Psilocybin will be detailed. Discussion will cover implications for the future of addiction, trauma, depression, and pain and palliative care treatment. (IPEC: Values and Ethics; Roles and Responsibilities)
Dr. Coop received his PhD from the University of Bristol in the area of chemistry of drugs of abuse, followed by a Fogerty post-doctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health. He has been a faculty member in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences since 1999, serving as chair of the department from 2007-2015. His NIH-funded research area focuses on the design and synthesis of new opioid analgesics with reduced tolerance, and the development of novel antidepressants.
Dr. Leah Sera is an Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Program Director for the Master of Science in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics (MCST) program at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. Dr. Sera received her PharmD from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and completed two years of post-graduate training, specializing in palliative care. She is a board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist and completed a Master of Arts in Instructional Systems Development at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

Category I Maryland BSWE Requirement
The Office of Continuing Professional Education at the University Of Maryland School Of Social Work is authorized by the Board of Social Work Examiners in Maryland to sponsor social work continuing education programs.
