Description
Maryland is the state with the highest number of federal government workers and contractors, many of whom are now unemployed, coping with an unexpected retirement or who are in fear of losing their income. There is uncertainty about the effect of federal government actions on Maryland’s economy, including the impact on public benefits and funding for assistance programs. Attend this training to collaborate with your peers, discuss the current landscape and learn strategies and tips to help clients cope in this stressful and unchartered time, both from a psychological and financial perspective.
This workshop is in accordance and compliance with the NASW standards, with a focus on the principles of service, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships and competence; and the standard of responsibilities to clients and responsibilities as professionals.
Maryland: This workshop is in compliance with the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners’ COMAR 10.42.03.06.A(5).
District of Columbia: This workshop is in compliance with the District of Columbia Board of Social Work 17-70-7008.4.

Sue Rogan, AFC is the Director of Strategic Partnerships at CASH Campaign of Maryland, where she leads the expansion and support of asset-building coalitions and partnership development to cultivate and broaden a group of stakeholders across the state who are committed to asset building programs, such as financial education, financial coaching, and tax preparation. She leads CASH’s efforts to provide professional development for practitioners and oversees special projects that serve unique audiences. She also serves as CASH’s representative on several state commissions to represent the individual consumer voice and is a Board Member of Consumer Action. Sue obtained a BA in Political Science from University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) and, prior to joining CASH, was an Investigator/Communications Manager with Montgomery County Office of Consumer Protection.
Veronica Purcell Crosby, MMHS Related Seminars and Products
CASH Campaign Of Maryland
Veronica is the Program Manager for Tax and Financial Capability with CASH Campaign of Maryland. In this role Veronica provides direct services to clients who need to be connected to money-saving benefits and free tax preparation. Veronica has over 10 years of experience in Human Services, which includes Program Director and Case Management in the areas of housing, homelessness, and social services. Veronica holds a Master of Management degree with a concentration in Children, Youth, and Families from Brandeis University.
Learning Objectives
Upon the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Identify and articulate at least two psychological factors that clients may demonstrate in response to the current political and economic environment.

Apply at least two financial best practices to support clients facing unemployment, unexpected retirement, or potential loss of income.

Demonstrate effective communication strategies to facilitate discussions with clients about their financial and psychological concerns in a way that fosters trust and understanding.

Category I Maryland BSWE Requirement
The Office of Continuing Professional Education at the University of Maryland School of Social Work is authorized by the Board of Social Work Examiners in Maryland to sponsor social work continuing education programs. This workshop qualifies for 1.5 Category I Continuing Education Units. The Office of Continuing Professional Education is also authorized by the Maryland Board of Psychologists and the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors to sponsor Category A continuing professional education.

The Office of Continuing Professional Education at the University of Maryland School of Social Work adheres to the NASW Code of Ethics.
