Description

This course will provide a foundation level knowledge and understanding for participants interested in social work practice in sporting environments. It begins to prepare social workers to assist athletes, at all levels that they encounter in various settings. This course will introduce participants to the intersectionality between social work and mental health disorders in athletics, parenting and youth athletics, athletes in foster care and how social services use sports as a social work intervention. 

 

This workshop is in accordance with and compliance with the NASW Standards with a focus on service, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, competence, and social workers’ ethical responsibilities to clients, in practice settings, as professionals, to the social work profession, to the broader society. 

This workshop is in compliance with the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners’ COMAR 10.42.03.06.A(5) and with the District of Columbia Board of Social Work 17-70-7008.4.

Dr. Emmett Gill Jr. joined University of Houston Athletics as its Mental Health Counselor in February 2024. In his role, Dr. Gill assists Houston student-athletes in addressing emotional issues including focus on improved self-esteem, behavioral changes and enhanced mental well-being. 
 
Gill Jr., who is a licensed clinical social worker in Texas, founded AthleteTalk, LCC, in December 2019. There, he was responsible for developing multi-day plans for athlete wellness and behavioral/mental health while providing mental health services to collegiate and professional athletes. 
 
He previously worked at Vibrant Emotional Health as its Professional Sports Crisis & Wellness Program Manager. There, he developed evaluation methods for NFL Mental Health Event Action Plans (MHEAPs) and reviewed, evaluated, and improved initial MHEAPs for all 32 NFL teams. Gill Jr. also assisted with the reporting of monthly and semi-annual NFL LifeLine utilization data. Additionally, he worked with the NBA and NHL alongside league personnel on mental health and wellness training and health provision proposals.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Upon the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Apply the multidimensional contextual perspective to examining athletes at various stages of the life cycle. 

  • Critically select, adapt, and evaluate theoretically supported practice strategies and principles in relation to: a) athletes functioning and problems, needs, and concerns of varying duration and onset, b) congruence with the athletes culture and related experiences; c) fit with values and ethics of the profession in the context of athletic spaces; d) applicability to athletic teams, spaces, and systems; and e) emphasis upon athlete advocacy in sports systems at various levels. 

  • Analyze the influence of power differentials on athletes (athlete-coach process and athlete-system process and b) engaging in self-evaluation and self-correction of values and personal responses when thinking about and/or practicing with athletes.  

  • Apply ethical making decision strategies to complex ethical legal dilemmas encountered in practice with athletes in various settings and at various stages.

Category I Maryland BSWE Requirement

The Office of Continuing Professional Education at the University of Maryland School of Social Work is authorized by the Board of Social Work Examiners in Maryland to sponsor social work continuing education programs. This workshop qualifies for 3 Category I Continuing Education Units. The Office of Continuing Professional Education is also authorized by the Maryland Board of Psychologists and the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors to sponsor Category A continuing professional education. 

 

ASWB Information 

University of Maryland School of Social Work Office of Continuing Professional Education, #1611, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 2/11/2024-2/11/2027.  

To receive ACE credit, full attendance is required; no partial credits will be given for partial attendance.

Late Fees and Refunds

The base price is $70, which includes CE credit.  

Late Fee: On 09/03/25, a non-refundable late fee of $20 is added to the base price. Late fees cannot be refunded or applied to account credit.  

Cancellations: **ALL cancellations will be subjected to a $35.00 administration fee.**  To be eligible for a refund or CPE account credit, cancellations must be made at least 24 hours before the workshop.
