Description

What does the term “high-conflict” mean? We see it being used to describe couples  in couples therapy, some of whom may go onto have a divorce similarly categorized as “high-conflict.” How do we know when that term is being misapplied to a situation of domestic abuse/covert narcissistic abuse or post-separation abuse? What are the implications for how we do our work? This training is appropriate for anyone who does family therapy, couples therapy, and child therapy; and those currently acting as or interested in becoming a parenting coordinator, custody evaluator, etc. This training is of interest to those who want to learn more about narcissism and narcissistic abuse as well. We will touch on topics specific to 2SLGBTQ+ survivors.

I hold a Master of Theological Studies Degree and a Master of Social Work Degree. I have worked with all ages providing individual, couples, and child and family therapy in the mental health field for over 15 years. I am the founder of Reclaim and Rise Therapy. I serve on the Advisory Council for an Indigenous DV and SA program and serve as Healing Coordinator for Campaign for Southern Equality, as well as contribute to other projects. The best part of what I do is celebrating growth and witnessing courage as people create the lives and communities they’ve been hoping for.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Upon the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Day 1:

  •  Learn about the terms high-conflict, domestic abuse, narcissistic abuse, coercive control, and their origins.   
  • Describe post-separation abuse cycles.   

  • Assess more thoroughly for abuse, especially covert narcissistic abuse prior to couples therapy, child therapy, parent coordinating, custody evaluating, etc.   

  • Describe the differences between co-parenting and parallel parenting.   

 

Day 2:  

  • Gain knowledge of best practices for working with divorcing people/families labeled “high-conflict.”   

  • Increase knowledge of the realities of family court and its real implications for children and safe parents, including relevant, currently proposed legislation.   

  • Identify 3 specific concerns related to 2SLGBTQ+ individuals and families involved in “high-conflict divorce” and/or contested custody.   

  • Identify at least 3 ways to assist survivors of abuse.
