This training offers participants a broad look at medical cannabis and social work practice, including the history and current trends. Participants will be introduced to the ways cannabis and its constituents work in the human body and research probing how it can be used as a treatment method for physical and mental health conditions. Participants will examine the history of cannabis prohibition and discuss how federal regulations have overwhelmingly negatively affected Black and Brown communities. Participants will review social work principles and analyze their place in the cannabis industry. Additionally, principles of safe practices that support client safety are explored.
Paulette Simone Smith, MS, LCSW-C is the Founder and CEO of Paulette Simone & Associate, LLC (PS&A), a Baltimore, Maryland-based mental health counseling practice, and Canna Heals, an organization with a mission to build knowledge and close gaps between cannabis consumers and the dispensary. Originally from Harlem, New York, Paulette earned an MS in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. She received her MSW from Morgan State University School of Social Work, concentrating in School Social Work. Paulette earned her bachelor's degree from Bowie State University, majoring in communications and broadcast journalism. Paulette is a board-certified social work supervisor in the State of Maryland.
With over a decade of experience in adolescent and family wellness. Paulette brings together a combination of holistic practice and trauma-informed care to the field of health and wellness. She has built a reputation for centering client needs with precision problem-solving during her career.
Additionally, her work in the creative arts as owner and operator of How I See It Productions also reflects her capacity for capturing and cultivating peaceful environments promoting wellness and a healthy family environment. Ms. Smith is sought after for guidance on and support in holistic practices, including but not limited to presenting at conferences and meetings exploring health, wellness, and entrepreneurship—particularly among minority groups.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Upon the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
Identify ways in which social injustices caused by the history of cannabis prohibition and the ongoing War on Drugs have negatively affected Black and Brown communities.
Learn how cannabis and its constituents work in the human body.
Examine current research findings on medical cannabis and treatment strategies for selected physical and mental health conditions including: chronic pain, psychosis, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and bipolar disorder.
Learn ways in which clinicians can dialogue with their clients about cannabis use.
