Tisa Silver Canady, EdD, MBA


Tisa Silver Canady, EdD, MBA, is a financial wellness advocate for today’s scholar. As an author and collegiate financial wellness expert specializing in student loan debt, she has personally advised students and families on the repayment of more than $90 million in student loans. Dr. Silver Canady has extensive experience in higher education as an administrator, faculty member, and researcher. As the Director of Financial Education and Wellness at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, she was responsible for campus-wide financial education programming and debt management initiatives. Since 2012, Dr. Silver Canady has provided training to financial aid administrators on financial literacy and program development through the Delaware–DC–Maryland Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. Dr. Silver Canady also served as a faculty member at the University of Delaware, specializing in principles of corporate finance and securities analysis. In 2007, she received the Student Choice Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award. During her time at the University of Delaware, she served as a frequent contributor to the WHYY PBS 12 Nightly Business Report. A highly sought-after thinker on personal finance, Dr. Silver Canady has authored personal finance content for outlets including Forbes, Investopedia, and BET. Her financial insights also have been featured in radio, television, and print outlets, including TIME, Ladies’ Home Journal, ESSENCE Magazine, FOX Business, MSN Money, Yahoo! Finance, USA Today, Black Enterprise, and Maryland Public Television. In 2018, Dr. Silver Canady conducted Campus-Based Financial Education in Maryland: A Survey of Postsecondary Institutions (SPIN) to assess needs and opportunities to invest in financial education and student financial well-being programs on Maryland’s postsecondary campuses. The project earned the endorsement of the State of Maryland’s Financial Education and Capability Commission. Passionate about how the student loan crisis has perpetuated a wealth gap in the Black community, Dr. Silver Canady released Borrowing While Black (2020), a book that focuses on helping Black borrowers make strategic decisions about student loans. In 2021, she launched the Maryland Center for Collegiate Financial Wellness. The Center fosters a continuum of campus-based financial wellness programming and supports that build financial life skills and empower students to thrive. Dr. Silver Canady is on a mission to increase financial education around student loan borrowing. A double graduate of the University of Delaware, she earned a doctorate in higher education administration/community college leadership from Morgan State University.
