The use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) often results in negative effects on sexual function, which may be expressed as lack of libido or difficulty with sexual performance. These effects may be experienced as added stressors for those already coping with mental illness. This course will examine the impact of selective SSRIs on sexual functioning. There will be a discussion of sexual side effects of these medications, and an in-depth discussion of how social workers can work with clients to help them address these side effects. There will also be discussion of how to help clients learn how to advocate for themselves when working with their prescribing physician.
